Lame Space Filling Post

I woke up this morning to the very wonderful Galaxie 500 cover of Ceremony.

I am Ian Curtis and I am dead now.

Dagnamit that is a fine cover. So instead of coming up with some decent content here is a short list of fantastic covers. Disagree at will.

Galaxie 500 - Ceremony
Johnny Cash - Hurt
When the Levee Breaks – Kristen Hersh
The Gourds - Gin and Juice
Jeff Buckley - Halleluiah
Wedding Present - Come up and see me…
Frank and Walters - Funky Cold Medina
White Stripes - Jolene
Be Good Tanyas – Oh Suzanna
Billy Childish – Jaguar and Thunderbird

Muse have done a fine version of The Smiths "Please, please, please let me get what I want this time."

Others :

Real Big Fish - Ska version of Aha's "Take On Me" or their version of "Popeye The Sailor Man"

Carter USM - doing Shampoo's "Trouble" or Pet Shop Boy's "Rent".

Weird Al Yankovic - "American Pie" rewritten to fit "Star Wars 1 The Phantom Menace", I think it's called "Anakin Guy".

The Automatic - "Gold Digger"

The brass band that covered KLF's "What Time Is Love"

There are some rather fine brass band covers of early Talking Heads. The Weird Al Yankovic one as I recall is pretty good, but then - he is.

Remember the New fast Automatic daffodils version of Purple Haze? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Yes I do remember the "New Fast Automatic Daffodils". I would like to know where I can get the brass band Talking Heads, I am a big Talking Heads fan and being a Northerner I compelled to like Brass Bands.

I read somewhere that Adam Sandler did an album of Metallica covers in a "Maritime" style. The mind boggles, but I have never found it. It is the holy grail for lovers of covers.

You NEED to listen to Ben Folds Five cover of NWA's seminal track, "Bitches Ain't Shit."

And anything by Me First And The Gimme Gimmes.

Rarer than covers are original songs that no one knew about till they were covered. Take the song "Tainted Love," for example, which is generally attributed to Soft Cell, but was originally recorded by Gloria Jones in 1964--it's a MUST hear.

I forgot to mention, "Hurt" is only one of Johnny Cash's great covers. Other's include a cover of Neil Diamond's "Solitary Man," and perhaps most originally, a cover of Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage."

Happy listening.

Me First And The Gimme Gimmes have a substantial allotment on my laptop's hard drive. I thought of one and now I've forgotten it again. ... long pause ... errr .... long pause .... errr .... it's gone. I'll say Candy Flip's "Strawberry Fields", but I'm taking the piss.

Frank Zappa-'Ring of Fire'?

What about the 'covers' of albums? I like Ozric Tentacles covers...they take me to another world deep in the heart of our mysterious universe.
